| Established in 1968, the Hagerstown Community College Foundation,
Inc. assists the College in its mission of being a comprehensive "open
door" educational institution. Community is Hagerstown Community
College's middle name and the Foundation's mission is to provide financial
assistance to area students in obtaining an affordable, quality education
at HCC.
To meet this objective, the Foundation seeks and secures charitable
contributions from individuals, businesses, civic and service groups,
organizations, corporations, and foundations, and forms partnerships
with business and industry to assist in the College's work force
development programs. Its funds are endowed, and only the interest
income is used primarily for academic scholarships; the principle
remains intact.
HCC Foundation scholarships provide possibility and encouragement
for worthy students who could not otherwise afford to attend college.
A variety of scholarships exist within the Foundation, each with
its own criteria. Unrestricted awards are need based; restricted
or "named" scholarships are created at the $25,000 giving level;
Booster Club scholarships are awarded to qualified student athletes;
and the faculty/Foundation Scholarship for Academic Excellence is
a joint venture with College faculty providing merit based scholarships
for selected honor high school students.
Foundation scholarships are awarded annually on a per semester
basis. Applications can be obtained from the Office of Institutional
Advancement and the Student Financial Aid Office. Deadlines are
the Monday before Thanksgiving and one week following the deadline
for filing federal income tax forms.
Another program supported by the HCC Foundation is the Mable R.
Walter Arboretum Endowment. The Mable R. Walter Arboretum includes
flowerbeds and formal gardens, and is a wildlife sanctuary as designated
by the Maryland Ornithological Society. The Arboretum Endowment
Fund ensures the perpetuity of the Arboretum and the beauty of our
campus. Interest is used for maintenance, and for the purchase of
equipment, supplies, trees, plants, and replacement paintings.
The Foundation enjoys status as a charitable organization under
provisions of Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This
assures that all gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowable
by law. Foundation funds are professionally invested to generate
maximum earnings with minimum risk. The Foundation's community-based
30 - member Board of Directors provides
oversight for contributions.
