FAQs

The following are the questions most frequently asked about advising. You are always welcome to contact the Office of Advising for more information.

How do I get started as a new student at HCC?
The first step for students, who wish to attend HCC, is to complete an admissions application that they can receive online, within the Office of Registration (CP110), or inside a course schedule book. The second step is to schedule a placement assessment date within our Testing Center. You may reach the Test Center at 301-790-2800, ext. 305. For those students who have taken the SAT and score at least a 550 verbal and 550 Math, you are exempted from taking the placement test. ACT scores of 21 or higher or passing of a college level english are exempted from the reading and writing assessment. The third step is to order or collect official transcripts from all previously attended institutions. The fourth step, is to bring your placement test scores , SAT/ACT score sheet, and official transcripts with you to share with an academic advisor, who will then assist you in planning your academic plan.*Test scores longer than five years are not valid.

How often should I meet with an advisor?
Students are required to meet with an advisor prior to their first semester. They are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor until they have declared a major. Students will then be assigned to a faculty advisor in the academic program that the student chooses. Veterans, student athletes, academically dismissed, or students on academic probation should see an advisor each academic term. Other than this, how often students meet with an advisor is a personal decision and will differ from one student to another depending on each student's needs, goals, and circumstances.

What should I discuss with my advisor?
Students can address concerns such as: whether or not they are on track for completing an associates degree, certificate, or letter of recognition. At some point in a student’s academic career, they will need to research colleges and transfer programs or inquire as to what is their next step. Return to Questions

How can I meet with advisors from colleges and universities to which I'm interested in transferring?
On various dates throughout the year, the Office of Advising invites college and university representatives to come meet with students individually about the application process and transfer requirements. Students should contact the advising office to find out when colleges are scheduled to be in the Advising Office and to schedule an appointment.

Can I send my advising questions by email?
Advisors will gladly respond to e-mail inquiries about general advising information. Because the security of e-mail can not be completely guaranteed, in order to protect each student's privacy we will not use e-mail to discuss confidential information such as grades, placement test results, etc. If the advisor you have been working with has given you their personal e-mail address, please contact them directly. Otherwise, e-mail advising inquiries may be directed to: advise@hagerstowncc.edu.

What is an Articulation Agreement?
Hagerstown Community is dedicated to creating partnerships with four-year colleges and universities. One important way of doing this is by forming articulation agreements. An articulation agreement is an officially approved agreement that matches coursework between schools. These agreements are designed to help students make a smooth transition when transferring from Hagerstown Community College to a four-year institution. Currently, HCC has out of state college partnerships, with colleges such as Shephard College and Shippensburg University. Additional partnerships also exist between HCC and Maryland schools. To find out which schools they are, students should log onto ARTSYS. All Maryland public institutions and many private schools show listings under "Recommended Transfer Programs" that spell out which courses to take at HCC in order to transfer smoothly into a specific major.
