1. If I am seeking admission into a Health Sciences Program, what is my first step?
Students interested in a Health Sciences program at HCC, should first view Academic Advising. While viewing the Academic Advising website, students can receive information regarding Health Sciences Program information, required courses and their descriptions, and more importantly, S.O.A.R. Information Session dates! S.O.A.R. which stands for- Student, Orientation, Advisement, and Registration is a group advisement program for new students. Among the scheduled dates are sessions called Health Sciences S.O. A. R. Orientation sessions. Students interested in one of the Health Sciences Programs, can be advised on health sciences associate and certificate programs, placement test results, and assistance with course selection within those programs. Students can register for S.O.A.R. sessions beginning in April through the end of July.

2. What is a Selective Admissions Program?
A selective admissions program is a program which requires an additional application to be submitted for admission into the program. The selective admissions programs offered at HCC are nursing, radiography, practical nursing, and paramedic emergency services.

3. What are the General Admission requirements for the Health Sciences Programs at HCC?
All of the health sciences degree programs have selective (not open) admissions, and admissions are highly competitive due to limited class sizes. Submit application by cutoff date.

  1. Submit official transcripts from other colleges attended.
  2. Grade point average of 2.5 or higher for all college course work.
  3. Graduation from high school or completion of GED. (Some programs have minimum age requirements.)
  4. One eligibility requirement for BIO-103 Anatomy and Physiology is to provide documentation of passing a high school or college level chemistry course. Students should provide the Registration Office with a copy of their official transcripts.
  5. Completion of college placement tests in mathematics, English, Reading, and Science and follow-up with indicated course work.
  6. For nursing and radiography applicants, completion of BIO-103 and enrollment in BIO-104 (Anatomy & Physiology).
  7. For paramedic applicants, completion of PES-101 EMT Basic; PES-102 Introduction to EMS, and PES-103 EMS Practicum I, or equivalent standards.
  8. Extra Expenses:
Health sciences programs generally require the following, the cost of which is born by the student: uniforms, liability insurance, supplies, health insurance, criminal background check, and a physical examination by your health care provider including immunizations and drug screenings.

4. Is it difficult to be admitted into the nursing or radiography program?
Each year students vigorously prepare themselves toward applying to one of the two highly desired Health Sciences programs. Each year any number of students will apply to either program, with different academic records, completion of major core courses, and those students who reside in-state, in-county, and out of county. It is very difficult to determine whether any one student will be admitted into their desired program. It is strongly recommended that students familiarize themselves with the core program requirements, work with an academic advisor to create an academic plan, complete as many of the program courses and most importantly focus on attaining a good grade point average. However, students who are in-county residents (Washington County) are given preference for admission into HCC’s Health Sciences Programs. If you are ready to apply to your desired program, APPLY!

5. Should I only apply to HCC’s RN, LPN, or radiography program?
Students are encouraged to apply to more than one program. After deciding what career in Health Sciences that you want to pursue, research all institutions that offer the program you wish to seek admittance. Find out what of your courses will transfer to the institution, acquire program requirements, and a list of the application deadline dates. If you are not selected as a candidate into your desired program at HCC, other options toward reaching your career goal are available. A final note, those students who only want to enroll within a program offered at HCC, look towards the future. Complete not only HCC’s program requirements, but work on other courses toward completion of an advanced degree after completion of the two-year degree or certificate. Students are encouraged to apply to various college institutions that offer their desired degree program in health sciences.

6. Do most of the Health Sciences programs require CPR certification?
Yes they do, however contact HCC’s Health Sciences Department or an Academic Advisor regarding the resources for where students can receive the required CPR training.

If I was enrolled at another institution can I transfer college level courses taken that may fill one of the Health Sciences program requirements offered at HCC?
Students planning to transfer to HCC will need to forward all official transcripts from previously attended institutions. Transfer students requesting advanced standing, must meet the academic requirements for admission, and will be evaluated on an individual basis. Students transferring from another similar program will be evaluated individually. Students should discuss their situation with the program coordinator.

8. What is the deadline date for applying to the nursing (RN) and radiography programs?
The deadline date for nursing is is January 15th and the deadline for radiography programs is October 1st.

9. What is the deadline date for applying to the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program?
The deadline to apply to the LPN program is November 1st.

10. What is the deadline date for the paramedic emergency services program?
The deadline for the Emergency Services program is November 1st.

11. What is the Anatomy & Physiology Placement Test and am I required to take it?
The purpose for the Anatomy & Physiology Placement Test is to ensure that students have a firm foundation of Biology and Chemistry in order to be successful in the Anatomy & Physiology courses. The primary prerequisite for majority of the Health Sciences programs offered, students must be eligible to enroll into the Anatomy & Physiology courses (BIO-103 & BIO-104). In order to be eligible, all students are required to take and pass the Anatomy & Physiology Placement Test with a minimum passing grade of 65%. There is also a Math and English prerequisite before a student can sit for the exam. For Math, a student must pass MAT-099 or place into MAT-100 or higher and pass ENG-100 or place into ENG-101. A final prerequisite is that students must document a passing grade in high school Chemistry or college level Chemistry course.

12. Where can I obtain an application in order to apply to a Health Sciences Program?
Students can obtain a Supplemental Application for Selective Admissions Program by clicking on the link, or obtain paper applications within the Health Sciences Division or the Office of Academic Advising. Students should consult with an academic advisor to see if program prerequisites and general education core courses have been completed in order to be eligible to apply to an HCC Health Sciences program.

13. If I have taken Anatomy and Physiology at another college institution, how long is the course still valid in order to transfer into a Health Sciences program offered at HCC?
Health Sciences Program Coordinators have the right to reject physical science courses older than seven year. For students who have taken Anatomy and Physiology at previous institutions but over the seven years, students will be required to take HCC’s Anatomy and Physiology Placement test and place into the BIO-103 course. Students should contact the Science Learning Center, (SCI-118) at 301-790-2800, ext. 251 for testing dates, times, and additional information.

14. What should I expect regarding clinical hours for HCC’s Health Sciences Programs?
Students enrolled in a health sciences program need to know that their classes and clinical schedules will vary, and are likely to include evening and weekend hours. All students enrolled in a health sciences program are required to provide their own transportation to clinical experiences, which may occur at various sites in the quad-state area. Students must maintain a “C” or better in all courses in their respective health sciences program.

Technical standards, i.e., motor and sensory abilities exist for these programs.
