1. Can a student test out of a course required in the nursing curriculum?
It is the policy of the Department of Nursing to evaluate previous academic success in nursing on an individual basis. As a result of this evaluation, full credit may be rewarded, or student will need to show proof of competency in the course in question by passing an examination.

2. If I currently work as a licensed LPN, can I apply to the RN program offered at HCC?
A current licensed LPN can apply for Alternate Program for Licensed Practical Nurses. Students will need to (1) Submit a Supplemental Application for Selective Admissions Program by the RN application deadline date. (2) Obtain approval from HCC's Department of Nursing . (3) LPN's must also show proof of graduation within the past year from an approved school of practical nursing within the the past year OR proof of one full year of full-time employment as a licensed practical nurse within the past five years. (4) MUST have an active LPN license in the state of Maryland (5) Complete all general education and program requirements for the RN program must be completed prior enrollment into NUR-201 and (6) Satisfactory letter of reccommendation from the most recent nurse manager. For further information regarding the Challenge Exam, students should contact the Health Sciences Division at 301-790-2800, ext. 276. proof of one year of employment within the past pfive years, and a letter of reccomendation from a recent nurse manager.

3. If I do not get admitted into the nursing program at the school of my preference, what are my nursing program options?
Students interested in the Nursing field should exhaust all of their options for where they can receive formal training. Research other two-year and four year institutions that offer both RN and BSN programs.

4. Where can I find additional information about nursing?
Students can search through the following websites listed below to find out other resources that can assist them in creating their nursing career plan.

5. Where do students enrolled in HCC’s nursing programs obtain clinical work assignments?
All students are required to attend clinical affiliations at any of the facilities in use by the nursing program. To obtain a list of the participating medical institutions, contact the Health Sciences Department at 301-790-2800, ext. 276. Clinical sites are arranged each semester subject to the availability of faculty and space at a facility. Below is a list of some participating medical institutions:

6. How many hours are required for nursing clinicals?
The lecture and clinical components are combined into each of the nursing courses. The clinical hours and sites are as arranged by faculty and facilities.Students should be aware that clinical hours may include day, evening, and weekend hours. Transportation to clinical sites and to field trip visits is the responsibility of the student.

7. Are scholarships available to nursing students attending HCC?
Scholarships are available for students pursuing certificate or degrees in nursing. It is important for students to research their scholarship opportunities, deadline dates, and scholarship requirements. Below is a list of scholarships available:

8. Can a HCC nursing student be considered for an award for strong academic achievement through their enrollment in a nursing program at HCC?
Students can be recognized by the nursing faculty at HCC for continued academic excellence through enrollment into one of HCC’s Nursing programs.

9. If I am a pre-nursing or nursing student attending Hagerstown Community College is there a club or organization I can join?
The Association of Nursing Students (ANS) is open to students enrolled in pre-nursing courses and the nursing curriculum. The purpose of the ANS is to foster professionalism in nursing. ANS projects support monthly ANS educational meetings, student expenses for continuing education seminars, community service activities, promoting the image of professional nurses, and attendance at the yearly National Student Nurses’ Association Convention. Annual membership fee charged.

10. Do nursing faculty at HCC use Blackboard for students admitted into the Nursing program?
The nursing faculty use Blackboard for posting course information, announcements ,and grade notifications. Students can also use Blackboard.
