SOC-106 Race and Ethnic Relations in the United States

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the sociological study of race and ethnic relations in the United States. A variety of theories surrounding the origins of racial and ethnic inequality will be explored in order to put racial/ethnic relations in cultural, historical and social structural context. Major topics to be covered include: racism and intolerance, institutionalized discrimination, ethnocentrism, colonialism and assimilation, historical immigration and migration patterns, segregation, hate crimes, and societal diversification. Total of 45 hours of lecture. Prerequisite: SOC-101. Semesters offered: Fall, Spring. 3 Credits.
