FAQs
The certificate program is designed for the student interested
in an entry-level position as a medical assistant in a medical office
or other healthcare settings. The program provides lecture as well
as competency based training in both administrative and clinical
procedures. Upon successful completion of the program, the student
will be able to demonstrate proficiency in both administrative and
clinical duties associated with a healthcare setting. Administrative
tasks include patient appointment scheduling, updating and filing
medical records, completing insurance forms, billing processing,
and other medical office administrative duties. Clinical duties
performed by a medical assistant include recording vital signs,
preparing patients for examinations, assisting the physician with
procedures, and other duties involved in the clinical care of a
patient. There is a non-compensated externship experience in which
the student works in an actual healthcare setting. Externship sites
may have their own requirements that the student must meet prior
to the experience. A mandatory meeting is scheduled the week before
the externship semester begins. The student must provide appropriate
health records that include a history and physical, required immunizations,
and a negative TB test prior to externship. The student must also
have a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR
certification as well as First Aid certification. The student who
successfully completes the program is eligible to sit for the American
Medical Technologists (AMT) national certification exam and is certified
as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), upon passing the AMT exam.
