Nursing
A Health Manpower Shortage Program
A.S. Degree

This is a career-oriented program leading to an associate of science degree. The curriculum is divided into several broad areas of study and consists of lecture and clinical experiences. Community facilities and agencies provide settings for clinical practice. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to meet the needs of individuals, family members and the community. Courses in general education provide students with the scientific and social background to function as effective people, citizens and health care providers. Math Requirement—Students accepted into the program must pass a dosage calculation quiz with a score of 90% or above. Nursing students must maintain a grade of “C” or better in all required courses and provide appropriate health records, including a negative TB test within one year. Students must also have current healthcare provider CPR and meet the program’s technical standards. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for the national examination for licensure as registered nurses. A college application and all admission requirements must be received by January 15 in order to be considered for the next fall’s entering class. HCC participates in a statewide articulation agreement. The University of Maryland offers its baccalaureate nursing program through the Washington County Outreach office. Other Maryland colleges offer their programs at various convenient locations. HCC also has an articulation agreement with Drexel University for its online BSN program.
