COMPASS Testing

The COMPASS assessments are a series of untimed adaptive tests in the areas of reading, mathematics, and writing. They are designed to select the range of questions that is appropriate for the test taker’s ability level. This process of computer adaptive tests is typically shorter than paper and pencil tests.

COMPASS Reading Assessment

You will be reading two or more passages and answering several multiple choice questions about each passage.

COMPASS Mathematics assessment

You will be able to select the level to begin the mathematics test based upon the level of math that you completed in high school.

You will be given scratch paper, a calculator, and pencils to work out multiple choice problems for this test.

COMPASS Writing assessment

You will be shown essays that contain errors in punctuation, grammar, writing style, and organization. You will be asked to read the selections, select and correct mistakes, and make revisions.

For practice, visit the ACT website at www.act.org/compass
Look for sample questions in Reading, Writing, Pre-algebra, and Algebra.
