Career Advising

Career advisors assist students who are undecided about their programs of study. Career advisors can help undecided students make important education and career decisions, and demonstrate how HCC can help facilitate their vocational goals. Appointments are scheduled by calling the Information Center at 240-500-2000.

Step 1: Self-Assessment

The first step in your career-planning process is to obtain a good understanding of your interests, values, skills, and personality style. Career advisors offer an assortment of career interest inventories such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Strong Interest Inventory, and the online career exploration tool, FOCUS 2. After taking assessments, you may work collaboratively with your career advisor to understand and utilize the results of your assessments in your career search.

  • FOCUS 2 - FOCUS 2 is an online, interactive, self-guided career, major, and education planning system. This is especially great if you're not sure about your program of study here at HCC.

Step 2: Career Exploration

The second step in your career planning process is to gain knowledge about available majors and career options. One major can lead to many career options. By learning about different careers, you can narrow down your choices to those that are a good fit. This can be done by researching occupations, career fields, and the job market using various career websites.

Step 3: Making Decisions and Educational Planning

The third step in the process is to make a decision and to devise a plan of action. Career advisors can help you create a plan with target dates for completion, evaluate your progress toward meeting your goals, and make adjustments if needed.

Step 4: Reevaluate

Periodically reevaluate your circumstances and repeat the process at the appropriate stage. This procedure may be repeated several times during your life.
