Summer Student Institute

Students in the Biotech summer institute programHagerstown Community College is proud to offer its fourth annual Biotechnology Summer Institute (BSI) for high school students.  The 2013 BSI will offer a very unique learning opportunity for students who are interested in advancing their education in a field related to science, healthcare, engineering, and biotechnology.  This competitive program will offer 20 select students a chance to earn 7 college credits during the 8-week summer institute.  Tuition and fees will be funded partially or fully by HCC's ESSENCE program and a National Science Foundation grant.  The summer institute will be heald on the campus of Hagerstown Community College in the new STEM Building between June 17, 2013 and August 9, 2013.

  • March 18, 2013 BSI Applications Due  *Extended to March 29, 2013*
  • April 12, 2013 STEM Career Day at HCC
  • April 15-21, 2013 Notification of accepted students
  • May 1, 2013 Welcome Reception for accepted students
  • June 14, 2012 BSI Orientation 8:30AM-11:30AM
  • June 17 - August 9, 2013 BSI courses, guest speakers & field trips

Summer Teacher Institute for Elementary Teachers

Hagerstown Community College is proud to off its fifth annual Summer Biotechnology Institute for teachers. The 2013 focus will be on microscopy and its use in the elementary classroom.  The goal of the Institute is to introduce elementary teachers to microscope technology while providing them with practical experience in the use of microscopes and ideas on how microscopy can be used to enhance instruction. The appropriate lessons that infuse microscopy into the existing elementary science curriculum.

Important Dates
  • Submit Application by June 3, 2013
  • Classes held June 17 - June 21, 2013
  • Friday June 21, 2013 will be a field trip

Summer Teacher Institute for Secondary Teachers

Hagerstown Community College is proud to off its fifth annual Summer Biotechnology Institute for middle and high school teachers.  The 2013 focus will be on microscopy and its use in Biotechnology.  The goal of the Institute is to enhance the understanding of current microscope technology and introduce 21st century microscopy technologies into middle and high school science curricula.

  • Classes held June 24 - June 28, 2013
  • Friday June 28, 2013 will be a field trip
