Home and Garden and Floral Design
What Bugs You in the Vegetable Garden
After all the hard work of preparing and planting a home vegetable garden, sooner or later it is attacked by insects and diseases. This course will teach how to recognize common harmful pests of common vegetable crops. The time to best control pests will be highlighted, along with cultural tactics. Pest control methods have come a long way from the days when pest control meant reaching for a can of insecticide and zapping the offender. Today many natural, inexpensive methods are available to fight diseases, insect pests, and unwanted intruders in the garden without the use of chemicals or other harmful deterrents. Plants can also suffer from diseases just like people. Identifying and treating vegetable disease can be one of the most challenging aspects of vegetable gardening. With a little knowledge however, you can learn to be your own "plant doctor", preventing and treating many common vegetable diseases.

Fall Vegetable Gardening
Much time and energy is spent on planting a home vegetable garden in the spring. But Fall is an excellent time to grow many vegetable crops. During this season the gardener can take advantage of cooler temperatures and more plentiful moisture. Fall gardening helps extend your gardening season so that you can continue to harvest produce after earlier crops have faded. Many vegetable crops are well-adapted to planting in late summer for a fall harvest. Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are better adapted to fall gardening, since they produce best quality and flavor when they can mature during cooler weather. In addition, many spring-planted crops such as lettuce and spinach tend to bolt and become bitter in response to the long, hot summer days and do extremely well as a fall crop. Topics such as watering, mulching, frost protection and season extension will also be covered.
