Self and Consciousness

Join anthropology instructor Julie Castillo for a thought-provoking cross-cultural discussion of personality, consciousness, and self. Of what is human identity made? Where does our sense of self come from: culture? Upbringing? External circumstances? The opinions of others? If you had grown up in a different culture-or as the opposite gender-or in a different century-would you still be you? Are you the same person now as you were twenty years ago? The concepts of self and existence vary greatly from culture to culture; even the manner in which we think and interact with the world is culturally prescribed.

Human Origins

What sets human beings apart from other creatures? Is it merely our big brains and dependence on culture? Or is it our unique sense of ourselves, or our relentless quest to find meaning in the universe? Where in the evolutionary process did we become, not merely homo sapiens, but human? In this thought-provoking class we'll take a journey back into the paleontological and archeological records to search for clues to the origins of human consciousness. We'll discuss the development of language, culture, personality, science, and religion-and weigh these factors against our own assumptions. Join us for a series of lively discussions!
