Stained Glass: a Study of Mosaics

Join Mary Lemen stained glass artist and owner of The Glass Loft for a new class in the art of Mosaics. Mosaics is the art of decoration with small pieces of colored glass, stone or other material. In this new class, instructor Mary Lemen will teach both the direct and indirect Mosaics methods. The direct method of mosaic construction involves directly placing the individual pieces onto the supporting surface. The construction of a serving tray will be the direct method project for the first three sessions. In this process glass is will be cut, placed and grouted to create a mosaic serving tray. The next three weeks will focus on the indirect method. In the indirect Mosaic method pieces are applied face-down to a backing paper using an adhesive, and transferred to the project. The indirect project will be a glass brick in which the glass is cut, placed into a mold then cemented. With the knowledge of these methods you can create table tops, stepping stones, and floor or wall mosaics. The possibilities are endless. The materials fee includes all materials to complete both projects and use of tools. You will need to provide a dust mask, rubber or latex gloves, and safety glasses. Please bring these items to the first class session. These items may be purchased at any hardware store and will be necessary for participation in this class. Please dress for work or bring a smock to protect yourself and your clothing. This class is open to participants 18 years of age and older. Class Limit: 10

Major events of the war are explored, including: the massacrre of Logan’s family at Yellow Creek; the Battle of Point Pleasant; and Governor Dunmore’s expedition to the Muskingum, culminating in the Indians ceding their Kentucky lands. The Desert War: World War II in North Africa

The Desert War started as an Italian attempt to revive the glory of Rome, with territorial acquisitions in North Africa. But when the Italians ran into trouble fighting against British forces, in early 1941 Hitler sent in what would become the famous Afrika Korps, a small German force commanded by Erwin Rommel. In reality the war in North Africa was nothing more than a side-show, especially in comparison with the massive forces battling on the Eastern Front. But despite that, Rommel’s German/Italian made history, pushing the British back to the western frontiers of Egypt. It was then that Bernard Montgomery was appointed to take command of the British Commonwealth field forces facing Rommel. Montgomery would prove Rommel’s nemesis, defeating the Axis army at El Alamein in the fall of 1942, forcing Rommel to retreat west, in the direction of the U.S. forces that had already landed in North Africa. Join Jeff Driscoll for this five-week class that looks at this fascinating piece of World War II history, beginning with Italy’s initial ventures, through the surrender of Axis forces in May 1943. Hitler: the Monster Leads the World To War:
1936-1941

By the end of 1936, Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party had reached a position of absolute power in Germany. For Hitler, however, it was just the beginning. He intended leading his nation into war —a war that would, among other things, destroy Bolshevism, win lands in Eastern Europe (“Lebensraum”), and gain sweet revenge for the unjust provisions set out in the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler would get his war, of course, a conflict that would eventually draw in most of the countries of the world and in the end be responsible for the death of as many as 50 million people. Join Jeff Driscoll as he looks at this fascinating, yet tragic, period in our world history. We’ll pick up our story in 1936, look at the next three years leading up to the outset of World War II, on September 1, 1939, then continue through the Invasion of the Soviet Union, on June 22, 1941. Hitler’s Downfall: the Monster Falls, 1941-1945

The Monster, Adolf Hitler, got his war, and for the first few years, things went even better than anyone had expected they would. That all changed, however, mainly because the Germans over-extended themselves by invading the Soviet Union. By the end of 1942, the German Sixth Army was facing annihilation in and around Stalingrad; Rommel’s Afrika Korps was retreating west from El Alamein; and German cities were being bombed. The German Wehrmacht, initially on the offensive, found itself now on the defense, and by 1944, Soviet armies were creeping ever closer to Germany’s eastern borders, and the western Allies had landed on the French coast and were slowly making their way up the boot of Italy. By the spring of 1945, German cities were in ruins, millions of Jews and other Europeans had been exterminated, and the “Monster” and his fanatical Nazi followers continued to hold out in Berlin. But the end was near. Join Jeff Driscoll for this three-week course that focuses on the final few years of World War II in Europe and the eventual collapse of Hitler and his Third Reich. The 1862 Maryland Campaign

Many historians claim that the fall of 1862 was the true “High-Water Mark” of the Confederacy. With Northern morale at its nadir, England and France still seriously considering assistance to the South, and Confederate armies advancing north into both Maryland and Kentucky, it seemed as if the Southern dream of independence would indeed become reality. Yet, in the space of just a few weeks in September 1862, all of that changed. By the 19th of that month, Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia had retreated back into Virginia, and just three days later, President Abraham Lincoln announced the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The Civil War had taken a new path, and there would be no turning back now. Join Jeff Driscoll on this 4-week long class that takes a close look at the 1862 Maryland Campaign and the long-term implications of its outcome. Class Limit: 20

Gems of Washington Tour With Carol Bessette

Join Washington Tour Guide Carol Bessette on this great new trip featuring the newly restored Lincoln’s Cottage, The Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building, an all inclusive lunch at the historic Old Ebbitt Grill and more! We will begin our day with a tour of the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building. This first separate Library of Congress Building was completed in 1897. A contemporary guidebook boasted: “America is justly proud of this gorgeous and palatial monument to its National sympathy and appreciation of Literature, Science, and Art. It has been designed and executed entirely by American art and American labor (and is) a fitting tribute for the great thoughts of generations past, present, and to be.” This new artistic masterpiece was an immediate success with the American public. Departing from Capitol Hill we will head down Constitution Avenue for an all inclusive lunch at the historic Old Ebbitt Grill. Founded in 1856, the Old Ebbitt Grill is the oldest most historic saloon in Washington. Today the Victorian interior evokes Washington saloons at the turn of the century. The antique clock over the revolving door at the entrance is an heirloom from the previous location, and the marble staircase with an iron-spindled rail was salvaged from the old National Metropolitan Bank next door. Following lunch and a visit to the Lincoln Memorial and Lincoln Park, we will depart for the historic Soldier’s Home to visit the National Historic Trust site of Lincoln’s Cottage. With the recent restoration and public opening of the Lincoln Cottage otherwise known as the “Anderson Cottage” on the grounds of the historic Soldiers’ Home presents an excellent opportunity to explore another layer of Lincoln’s life during his presidency. The “Anderson Cottage” was declared the President Lincoln and Soldiers’ Home National Monument in July of 2000. Since this time the cottage has undergone a great restoration and is now open to the public as an historic site. President Lincoln and his family spent a quarter of his presidency at the cottage and wrote his final draft of the Emancipation Proclamation there. Lincoln also spent the last night of his life at this beloved country haven before meeting his death at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. We look forward to seeing you on this tour! Fee includes: fully equipped motor coach transportation/gratuity, all entrance fees, private tour with Washington D.C. Tour Guide Carol Bessette, and an all inclusive lunch at the Old Ebbitt Grill.
