FAFSA tax information for students

The Student Financial Aid Office at Hagerstown Community College would like to make students aware of an issue with the U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid FAFSA process. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool will be unavailable for several weeks. Students completing the FAFSA can manually input tax information. (Note: The 2017-18 FAFSA requires 2015 tax info, not 2016.)

Complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA by March 1, 2017 to maximize eligibility for Maryland grants and scholarships.

Upcoming Changes to Financial Aid

In order to better serve students and allow additional flexibility, beginning with the spring semester, the FA census date will be moved further into the semester. The FA Census Date is the "freeze date" for Pell grant and scholarships. If you are receiving financial aid, please check with the Student Financial Aid Office before making changes to your class schedule. Schedules for Spring should be finalized by midnight on the FA census date of 03/15/17. Your aid will be based on the classes you are enrolled in and attending on 03/15/17. You must attend class to receive student financial aid. If you add classes for the semester after the FA census date 03/15/17, you will not be able to receive financial aid to pay for them. If you withdraw or drop from classes before 03/15/17, you will not be able to receive financial aid to pay for them. Faculty members at HCC will report if you never attend and report your last day of attendance if you stop attending classes. Your aid may be adjusted or you may owe money back. Student aid refund dates are not affected by this change and are available 14 days after disbursement (approximately March 30, 2017). Please contact the Financial Aid Office if you have any questions or concerns. Required Coursework Beginning with the fall 2016 semester, financial aid will only cover courses that count as required courses in your degree program needed to graduate. This means each course you are registered for in the fall semester must be listed as a needed course in your program evaluation/degree audit. To access your degree audit, please use the EVALUATE PROGRESS IN PROGRAM link/option under the STUDENTS section of WebAdvisor. You must be logged in to access this feature. If you have questions about whether your courses count in your program evaluation, please see the Academic Advising office in the Student Center. 2017-2018 FAFSA (FREE Application for Federal Student Aid) Changes 2017-2018 FAFSA filing will begin on October 1, 2016. Additionally, the 2017-2018 FAFSA will collect information from 2015 and not from 2016. This applies to both student/spouse income information and, for dependent students, parental income information. The FAFSA website address has not changed. You may file your FAFSA at
