Hagerstown Community College proudly has maintained accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since its first review in 1968. Accreditation is a way “to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality (U.S. Dept. of Education).” Officially accredited institutions can offer students eligibility for federal student loans and grants, credits that will transfer, and degrees that will hold their value.
Every 10 years, colleges and universities are reviewed by their peers as part of the accreditation process to make sure common standards are being met for their students. The evaluation process is ongoing, but requires a three-day campus visit by a team of peer reviewers once every ten years. During their visit, team members seek input from faculty, staff, students, and community and business leaders.
From April 12 to 15, a seven-member review team will be on campus to conduct a review of HCC. The process includes the evaluation of 14 standards of excellence that include: mission, goals, leadership, administration, and governance; institutional resources, planning, allocation, and renewal; institutional integrity and assessment/effectiveness; students, enrollment, management, and support services; faculty; education offerings, academic support services, and student learning outcomes assessment; and a special area of emphasis - strengthening and sustaining academic development.
While on campus, team members will be wearing yellow name badges during their visit so they can be easily recognized. The seven team members include:

During the team’s visit, students will have the opportunity to meet with the team members during a student forum, to be held Tuesday, April 14, from 9 to 10 a.m. in the BSH Auditorium (Room 114). Students will be able to learn more about the accreditation process, ask questions, and answer questions that team members may have about the student experience at HCC. The forum is open to all currently registered HCC students.
All attendees will be entered in a raffle for a faculty parking spot for the final two weeks of the semester.
