The PIGR Office works closely with both Online Education and Instructional Support Services and the Information Technology (IT) Department to create college videos and to maintain the college website. PIGR manages and maintains the HCC website with assistance from IT. All website requests should go through PIGR. Online Education and Instructional Support Services provides support to faculty, staff, and students in the use of audiovisual equipment, Moodle course management software and other distance education technologies. Requests for instructional or classroom videos or full-length event videos (e.g., graduation, honors convocation) should be submitted to   IT is responsible for maintaining campus computer networks and servers, computers, and other technology resources needed for instructional purposes, for student services, and for administrative functions. Although PIGR maintains the website, IT is responsible for WebAdvisor, Datatel, and Microsoft Outlook. Students who are interested in starting a social media account for their student organization or program should contact their organization's advisor or a faculty member.


Official Social Media Accounts

The Public Information and Government Relations (PIGR) Office is responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of official college accounts on several social media sites as a way to provide announcements and information about upcoming events and activities as well as to provide a forum for open discussion among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. As the administrative gatekeeper of social media, the PIGR Office is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and enforcing HCC’s social media policy and guidelines as necessary. Meet the PIGR Team

Beth Kirkpatrick Beth Kirkpatrick is the director of public information and government relations at Hagerstown Community College. She has more than 20 years of experience in public relations work. She holds a B.S. in communications and an M.S. in organizational leadership from Shippensburg University. Kate Zajdel Kate Zajdel is the webmaster at Hagerstown Community College. She has over five years of experience in Web and multimedia development. Zajdel has an A.A.S. from Allegany College of Maryland, a B.A. from UMBC, and an M.S. from Duquesne University. Sara Moore Sara Moore is the multimedia production specialist at Hagerstown Community College. Her professional experience includes working as a production assistant at NBC25 WHAG and and a production intern at ABC27 WHTM. She has a B.A. in telecommunications from The Pennsylvania State University. Brittany Lyle Brittany Lyle is the social media and public Information specialist at Hagerstown Community College. She has over five years of experience in marketing and government proposal work. She attended HCC as an ESSENCE student and received her A.A. She has a B.S. in Mass Communications from Towson University.

Tobacco Free Campus

New Smoking Policy Hagerstown Community College is committed to providing a safe and healthy working and learning environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on its campus, and adopted a Tobacco-Free Policy effective January 1, 2015. The Tobacco-Free Policy applies to all Hagerstown Community College facilities and vehicles, owned or leased, regardless of location.  Smoking and the use of tobacco and e-cigarette products shall not be permitted on any Hagerstown Community College property, including all buildings and facilities, walkways, recreational and athletic areas, building entrances, and parking lots. This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, and other persons on campus, regardless of the purpose of their visit. In consideration for tobacco users, college administration shall offer ongoing tobacco cessation programs to assist and encourage individuals who wish to quit. View a full list of upcoming workshops. The college administration shall establish appropriate procedures and consequences, which may include fines or disciplinary measures, for violations of this policy and create an information campaign and signage. Definitions: A.    “E-cigarette” means any electronic oral device, such as one composed of a heating element, battery, and/or electronic circuit, which provides a vapor of nicotine or any other substances, and the use or inhalation of which simulates smoking. The term shall include any such device, whether manufactured, distributed, marketed, or sold as an e-cigarette, e-cigar, e-pipe, or under any other product name or descriptor. B.    “Smoking” means inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying any lighted or heated cigar, cigarette, or pipe, including a hookah pipe, or any other lighted or heated tobacco or plant product, including marijuana, intended for inhalation, in any manner or any form. “Smoking” also includes the use of an e-cigarette which creates a vapor, in any manner or in any form, or the use of any oral smoking device for the purpose of circumventing the prohibition of smoking in this Policy. C.    “Tobacco Product” means any substance containing tobacco leaf, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, hookah tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, dipping tobacco, bidis, blunts, clove cigarettes, or any other preparation of tobacco; and any product or formulation of matter containing biologically active amount of nicotine that is manufactured, offered for sale, sold, or otherwise distributed with the expectation that the product or matter will be introduced into the human body by inhalation; but does not include any cessation product specifically approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in treating nicotine or tobacco dependence.

Social Media at HCC

Introduction Social media is a powerful communication tool and one that HCC actively uses to educate, inform, and collaborate with its students, staff, faculty, and alumni, as well as members of the community. Social media provides college staff and faculty with the ability to reach students outside the classroom and a way to better inform the public about college news and events. When it comes to social media usage on behalf of the institution, HCC expects its employees to be honest and transparent in their electronic communications as they would be in person and to respect privacy, confidentiality, and copyright laws. Posted content on college social media sites should always be accurate, concise, student-oriented, sensitive to diverse audiences, and respectful to the college, its employees, students, and the community. View all official Facebook and Twitter accounts Best Practices for Effective Online Communication To be successful on social media, faculty, staff, and students posting on behalf of HCC should: Be respectful of others. Whether you are an administrator or a fan/follower, always treat others fairly. Be sensitive to different perspectives and viewpoints and never react in a defensive or hostile manner.   Be accurate, honest, and transparent. Make sure you are providing accurate information. Take the time to verify information before it’s posted. If you make an error or need to post a correction or retraction, do so publically so that others are aware of it. Do not say anything that is dishonest, untrue, or misleading.   Respect confidentiality and privacy laws. Use good judgment about content and respect privacy laws. Do not post confidential or proprietary information about the college, its students, its alumni, or staff and faculty. Follow college policies and federal requirements such as FERPA. If in doubt, contact the PIGR Office for guidance.   Don’t violate copyright laws. Follow the laws governing copyright and fair use dealing with copyrighted materials owned by others, including HCC’s own copyrighted material and brand. It is good practice to give credit to the owner/author/creator for content that is not your own and provide a direct link or URL to that content if possible.   Be professional. As an employee, remember that you represent HCC. You are the public face of the college and should always consider the intended audience when posting or commenting. Proofread your content prior to posting and try to avoid spelling and grammatical errors.   Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Once something is posted online, it lives forever. Search engines frequently catalog posts and archive social media content. Don’t make the mistake of posting something that you will regret later or that could negatively impact the college, your current or future career, or your personal reputation.
