Creative Writing Peer Critiques
Welcome to the HCC English Club’s Peer Review section! A well constructed critique can make a positive difference in a writer’s work. We want this experience to be helpful and meaningful for all of our participants, and so with the help of our wonderful Ms. Miller, we’ve devised a few simple guidelines to help keep this site as constructive and beneficial as possible. A good contributor reads a piece as both a reader and a writer. The reader savors the work, experiencing the piece without expectation. The writer identifies the mechanics that contribute to and detract from the piece. These are guidelines we ask that you follow for a critique. 1) Read the piece as a reader and identify your overall impression and the obvious characteristics of the piece. 2) Read the piece as a writer and focus on the mechanics. Does anything "sound" awkward or stick out as unnecessary or lacking in detail? Are there places where the rhythm of the piece skips a beat, or flows exceptionally well? Be specific in your analysis. 3) Identify your favorite points (specific sentences, phrases, descriptions, and so on) and explain your choice. 4) Give at least two specific pieces of advice. 5) Add any other feedback you think would be appropriate. 6) End on a positive Enjoy the site! Please see the site below for more information about constructing a beneficial critique. http://www.allsands.com/Literature/peercritique_bzq_gn.htm
To post a piece to be critiqued, click the "Create Blog" option on the left hand toolbar. Please put (Fiction) or (Poetry) next to your title as appropriate. To post a critique on someone else's work, click the "Comment" button under that piece.
