HCC offers opera appreciation course

Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education is once again offering its annual opera appreciation course on the campus of HCC. The opera appreciation course features introductory lectures that cover a wide range of topics including opera story lines, composers, and historical background information on both the performers as well as the opera itself.
The course was first introduced by instructor Thomas Magruder 10 years ago and coincides with the spring 2008 opera season at the Lyric Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland. Students will attend two Saturday lectures on the campus of HCC before traveling to Baltimore for a Sunday matinee of the opera they’ve studied.
The opera of choice for spring 2008 is “Romeo and Juliette” by Charles Gounod. Cost is $115. The class fee covers two pre-opera lectures, one Grand Tier opera ticket, and transportation/gratuity. Classes will be held Saturday, March 29 and Saturday, April 5 and the Sunday matinee is April 6. Class is limited to 43 students.
