HCC Hall of Fame inducts seven new members

(July 7, 2008) - The HCC Hawk Booster Club held its annual Hall of Fame Banquet and induction ceremony on Monday, June 30, at the Beaver Creek Country Club.
     Seven new members were inducted into the HCC Hall of Fame. New members included the following:
     -Kim Saunders (Former HCC All-American track and field athlete)
     -Gene Kerns (Former HCC baseball coach)
     -Bob Bastian (Long-time HCC volunteer for the athletic administration)
     -Mike Martin (Former HCC baseball player who is now the Coordinator of Academic Advising at HCC)
     -P.J. Hiser (Former HCC baseball player who went on to play professional baseball)
     -Brian Wethey (Former HCC basketball and track and field athlete)
     -Chuck LaMelza (Former HCC baseball and basketball athlete)
Hall of Fame inductees were each presented with a commemorative plaque highlighting their athletic and volunteer services for HCC. Robert “Bo” Myers, director of athletics and leisure studies served as the master of ceremonies at the event. He was joined by Hawk Booster Club President and former HCC coach Jim Brown, as well as by Bill McKinley, Frank Erck, Cokey Robertson and incoming Hawk Booster Club President Rick Toms.
At the ceremony, the Hawk Booster Club also recognized endowed scholarship donors. Donors included:
      -William and Maggie Hetzer
      -Richard and Dale Phoebus
      -Mark and Euhla Swain
      -Hagerstown Trust Company
Other awards included the following: Ross Spielman was awarded The Irv Easterday Lifetime Achievement Awarddue to his remarkable service as a teacher. Jim Brown received The Athletic Director’s Special Recognition Award for his outstanding service to the Hawk Booster Club and to the HCC athletics department. HCC volleyball coach Beth Domenico and HCC baseball coach Scott Jennings each received The Hawk Booster Club Coach Recognition Award in recognition of their respective teams each finishing within the top 10 in the NJCAA final rankings.
The members of the 1970 Hawk baseball team were also honored at the event and each team member was presented with an original team photo by their former mentor and coach Cokey Robertson.
Hawk Booster Club President Rick Toms closed the evening by announcing that the annual Hawk Hall of Fame Golf Tournament would be named “The Irv Easterday Hawk Booster Club Hall of Fame Golf Tournament” in honor of former HCC athletics director Irv Easterday from this year onward.
