Lollipopalooza to be held August 16 at HCC

Hagerstown Community College will hold its eighth annual Lollipopalooza on Sat., Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in HCC’s Alumni Amphitheater. Sponsored by HCC’s Student Government Association, Lollipopalooza is a back-to-school family fun day that features children’s concerts and events. Activities and events include an inflatable slide and moon bounce, prizes and giveaways, face-painting and photo session for kids, songs by strolling guitarist Joe Poist, magic tricks by Uncle Bean the Magician, and a variety of musical performances throughout the day.
Musical performers include Jennie Avila, a folk musician that specializes in performing popular children’s songs. Avila accompanies herself on the acoustic guitar, the conga drum and a variety of other percussion instruments including the Japanese kokirikko, and is known for encouraging audience participation. She performs at 11 a.m.
Folk musician Slim Harrison will be performing at 12 noon. Harrison has been performing at schools and festivals all over North America for the last 25 years, and excels at teaching children about the roots of American folk music, as well as the many cultures that inspired it.
The children’s concerts will conclude with a performance by musician Bill Wellington at 1 p.m. Wellington has been performing children’s music for more than 20 years and specializes in writing fun and humorous songs that appeal to children. His 1990 release of the children’s album, “Radio WOOF,” won rave reviews in the national media including USA Today, which called Radio WOOF a “cure for the back-to-school blues.”
Activities and information will be available from Discovery Station, Family Recreation and Washington County Recreation Department, as well as a variety of other child-friendly organizations. Free popcorn and drinks will be provided by the HCC Alumni Association. In addition, the HCC concession stand will be open the entire day. Admission is free and this event is open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of at least one school supply, which will benefit Children In Need, Inc. of Washington County.
