HCC offers practical Spanish courses geared towards workplace and missionary work

This fall, Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education is offering five specially designed language courses geared towards helping students master the necessary vocabulary needed for specific job and travel situations.
The first course, “Spanish for Medical Professionals,” is offered on Tuesdays, from Sept. 16 through Nov. 11, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This course is a beginning level course for nurses and medical professionals to learn how to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking patients.
The second course, “Spanish for the Workplace,” is offered on Wednesdays, from Oct. 1 through Oct. 15, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. This course also provides employers and staff with the ability to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking employees. Topics covered include the Spanish alphabet, the Spanish surname system, and basic and work-related vocabulary.
The third course, “Spanish for Mission Teams,” is offered on Fridays, from Oct. 10 through Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This is a comprehensive course that incorporates the language used by service, volunteer, and religious organizations when bringing aid to Spanish-speaking countries and communities.

The fourth course, “Spanish for Banking,” is offered on Tuesdays, from Oct. 7 through Oct. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. This course covers vocabulary needed to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking customers is banking and related transactions.
The fifth course, “Spanish for Human Resources,” is offered on Fridays, from Oct. 10 through Oct. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. This course covers the phrases, questions, and skills needed by human resources personnel to communicate (effectively) with Spanish-speaking job applicants. Spanish pronunciation is reviewed and a hands-on manual will be provided for students as a future reference source.
All classes are offered at HCC’s Valley Mall Center and no prior knowledge of Spanish is needed for any of these five courses. In addition, employers also have the option of enrolling in customized Spanish training at the workplace. Options include lunch time Spanish language and culture intensive, half-day and full-day Spanish language and culture workshop, one-on-one Spanish coaching, as well as group training.
