Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education is offering a variety of diverse art classes in mediums such as beading, painting, and chair caning.
The first class, “Beading with Becky,” is offered on Thursdays, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., from Jan. 22 through Feb. 26. In this five class session, students will learn to create jewelry from an array of semi-precious gemstones, seed beds, wire, and cabochons. Students will create a different jewelry project during every class session. All skill levels are welcome and materials may be purchased from the instructor during the first class session. Cost is $ 65.
The second class, “Oil and Acrylic Painting with Rebecca Montgomery,” is offered on Tuesdays, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., from Jan. 20 through Feb. 24. Classes are designed for all skill levels and both beginning and experienced painters are welcome. Students are asked to bring a basic set of oil or acrylic paint, brushes and a canvas no larger than 16 x 20 inches. For more information about supplies, students can contact the instructor directly by calling 301-824-3407. Cost is $90.
The third class, “Learn the Heritage Craft of Chair Caning,” is by HCC instructor Jo Lum of Living Waters Chair Caning. Students will learn how to restore items such as rocking chairs, foot stools, piano benches, and dining room chairs through the art of seat weaving. Materials may be purchased from the instructor. Students are encouraged to bring items to class that they’d like to work on and are also asked to bring the following supplies: scissors, towel, measuring tape, bucket, pencil, a dozen clothes pins, and paper. Two sections of this course are offered. The first section meets on Thursdays, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Little Antietam Community Center, from Jan. 22 through March 26. The second section meets on Thursdays, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Valley Mall Center, from Jan. 22 through March 26. Cost is $115.
