HCC to offer seminar on treatment of self-injurious behaviors

Hagerstown Community College will offer a professional seminar, Detection, Intervention, and Treatment of Self-Injurious Behavior, on Friday, February 13 from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in The Merle S. Elliott Continuing Education and Conference Center.
     
This four-hour program, presented in collaboration with Brook Lane, will examine types of self-injurious behaviors, factors that contribute to self-injury, detection, intervention and treatment. Self-injury, listed in the DSM-IV-TR as a symptom of borderline personality disorder and depressive disorders, is a type of abnormal behavior characterized by the deliberate injury of body tissue without conscious suicidal intent. It is estimated that between four and 38 percent of young adults and adolescents at one time or another have self-injured themselves. This program will discuss the many facets of this alarming disorder and explore case studies highlighting detection, intervention and treatment strategies.
