HCC expands truck driving program

Hagerstown Community College recently expanded its commercial vehicle transportation program through the purchase of an additional Volvo VN670 tractor from Truck Enterprises, Inc. in Hagerstown.

“We have the largest community college program in the state of Maryland,” says John Cavey, HCC coordinator, commercial vehicle transportation. “We graduated 154 students last year and expect that number to continue to grow. With the purchase of this new truck, we now have the capacity to serve even more students.”

HCC currently has three tractor trailers that it uses for truck driver training, as well as one leased truck from D.M. Bowman, Inc. The addition of a fourth truck, which like the others has been specially modified for training purposes, will allow HCC to take more students into this rapidly growing program. According to Cavey, HCC’s truck driving program has grown by more than 13 percent in the last year and a half, which is due in no small part to the support the program has received from local trucking companies such as D.M. Bowman, Inc.; Hoffman Transport, Inc.; USA Cartage, Inc.; and Truck Enterprises, Inc., as well as HCC’s partnership with Volvo Powertrain.

Currently, HCC offers two certificates and one A.A.S degree in commercial vehicle transportation. For more information about HCC’s truck driving program, contact Commercial Vehicle Transportation Specialist Janie Spielman at 301-790-2800, ext. 449, or via e-mail at
