HCC honors students’ academic achievements in year-end ceremony

Hagerstown Community College held its eighth annual Honors Convocation on Thurs., May 13, in its Athletic, Recreation, and Community Center. The event recognized special awards, Phi Theta Kappa membership, graduation honors, Maryland Zeta Chapter of Lambda Nu for Radiological Sciences membership, and dean’s list honors.

Following remarks from HCC President Guy Altieri, attendees heard from Judith Oleks, vice president of academic affairs; Michael Parsons, professor, sociology; and two students, Amanda C. England and Matthew A. Griffith.

The awards were presented by Robert “Bo” Myers, director, athletics and leisure studies and Frances Cade, chair, behavioral and social sciences/business division, and recognized by Altieri and the HCC board of trustees.

Winners of the competitive awards include Amanda C. England, of Hagerstown, for the All Maryland Academic Team for Community Colleges – 2010 and the 2010 Coca-Cola Silver Scholar award; Beate Powell, of Hagerstown, for the All Maryland Academic Team for Community Colleges – 2010; Shirley S. Grattan, of Knoxville, Md., for the Alumni Community Citation Award; Ethan D. Reynolds, of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., for the Alumni Association Life Membership Award and the Campus Leadership Award; Brittany L. Marshall, of Fairplay, and Amy R. Turner, of Hagerstown, for the Award for Personal and Professional Growth in Nursing; Britta M. Shives, of Hagerstown, for Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics; and David C. Thoerig, of Clear Spring, for Pre-Engineering. Winner of the Commendation for Outstanding Computer Science Graduate is Bruce Lawson, of Hagerstown. Winner of the Commendation for Outstanding Mathematics Graduate is Matthew A. Griffith, of Boonsboro. Winner of the Commendation for Outstanding Science Graduate is David C. Thoerig, of Clear Spring.

Members inducted into the Maryland Zeta Chapter of Lambda Nu for Radiological Sciences include Nicole C. McCullough, of Greencastle, Pa. Members of this honor society must have a minimum 3.0 GPA after one full-time semester of a professional program and additional recognition such as a professional paper.
