(June 23, 2010) - Two Hagerstown Community College students were recently awarded scholarships from the Hispanic Association of Hagerstown (HAH). Carla Gutierrez, formerly of Austin, Texas, and Roselyn Melgar, of Hagerstown, each received a full-time scholarship for fall 2010.
Gutierrez, 20, is a business management major. After graduating from HCC in May 2011, she plans to transfer to the University of Maryland to complete her bachelor’s degree. Gutierrez says that her dream is to become a corporate accountant for Ernst and Young.
Melgar, 19, is a nursing major and plans to transfer to a four-year institution to complete her registered nursing degree after graduating from HCC in summer 2011. Melgar was awarded this scholarship previously in spring 2010 and was one of the first HCC students to receive this scholarship.
The HAH scholarship is intended to support the Hispanic student body of HCC. Scholarships are offered by semester and funds are raised annually at the Hagerstown Hispanic Festival. This year’s festival will be held on Sun., Sept. 19, at the Hagerstown Fairgrounds.
