SGA hosts Sleep-Out for the Homeless

HCC’s Student Government Association will host a “Sleep-Out for the Homeless,” on Thurs., March 24, beginning at 6 p.m., near the Student Center. 

The event will feature speakers and group discussions, as well as a showing of the film, “Homeless to Harvard.” A soup kitchen will be set up in the Hilltop Grill and attendees will spend the night outdoors sleeping in cardboard boxes. The event officially ends at 8 a.m. on Fri., March 25.

Schedule of Events:

  • 6 p.m.: Set up sleeping area outside of the Student Center
  • 6:30 p.m.: Eat at make-shift Soup Kitchen in the Hilltop Grill area
  • 7 p.m.: Speakers and discussion about homeless problem in our local area
  • 8 p.m.: Movie, “Homeless to Harvard” about a homeless girl and the struggles she has working her way into Harvard University
  • 10 p.m.: Homeless Awareness Activity
  • 11 p.m. – 6 a.m.: Sleep outside in our make-shift shelters
  • 6 a.m.: Help with breakfast at the REACH shelter in Hagerstown
  • 7 a.m.: Wrap-up, clean-up, ship-out

Each participant will be given a journal and there will be time for reflection throughout the evening.

This event is open to all HCC students and staff but is not open to the public or to guests. Attendees must pre-register by calling 301-790-2800, ext. 225. Deadline to register is Wed., March 23.

The SGA will have boxes available, but participants are welcome to bring small tents. Participants do not need to stay for the whole evening.
