HCC students design Web site for Women in Maryland Higher Education

(Release: May 26, 2011) - Students in the Web and Multimedia Program at Hagerstown Community College recently completed the design for the Women in Maryland Higher Education (WIMHE) Web site.

According to HCC Web and Multimedia Technology Instructor Sean Maher, each spring, students in the Web Server Administration course (WEB 205) are charged with the task of creating, designing, and implementing a new Web site for an outside non-profit organization or local business. This year, students worked with Jennifer Haughie, HCC director, admissions, records, and registration, to create a new Web site for the Women in Maryland Higher Education organization. Students interview the client and submit a proposal for the project, which includes goals, required technologies, content, and budget. Once the proposal has been accepted, students work closely with the client throughout the development process until the final draft of the Web site is approved and hosted to the World Wide Web.

“This was one of the most successful service-learning projects I’ve ever taught,” says Maher. “The students rose to every challenge, took it upon themselves to learn new technologies, and created a client-focused site that will serve as an excellent addition to their portfolios. Any Web design firm would be lucky to have such creative and talented minds working for them.”

Students involved in the project included Andrew Boylan, of Cascade; Kristina Bell, of Frederick; Kevin Bricker, of Smithsburg; Lisa Andrews, of Waynesboro, Pa.; and Glynis Knibb, of Williamsport.

“I am thrilled with the Web site,” says Haughie. “Not only did I personally learn a lot about putting a Web site together, I had a great time working with the students. They listened to the needs of the organization and came up with options and a fabulous plan. They were both professional and creative throughout the entire process. It was obvious to me that they received excellent training at HCC.”
