HCC club donates ponchos to fifth graders

(Release: October 10, 2011) - The Future Educators (FEA) Club at Hagerstown Community College recently donated more than 50 ponchos to fifth graders at Winter Street Elementary School.

According to Jeannine Stonestreet, assistant professor, psychology and elementary education, and co-advisor for the FEA Club, she was approached by a staff member at the Winter Street Elementary School and asked to help provide ponchos for the fifth grade class to use during their week-long visit at outdoor school.

“All the children needed ponchos but the families couldn’t afford them,” said Stonestreet. “I knew at that point that we only had two days to get as many ponchos as we could so I sent out a mass email to our education students. By the end of the following day, we had 55 ponchos. We were so excited!”

“Our club members are very dedicated to helping others and their attentiveness to this need was no exception. I am so proud to be able to work with such caring students," said Mary Beth Chaney, assistant professor, early childhood education and reading and co-advisor for the FEA Club.

The Future Educators Association (FEA) is a professional organization for students interested in education-related careers. The organization provides students with activities and materials that help them explore the teaching profession in a variety of ways and helps students develop the strong leadership traits that are found in high-quality educators. The HCC chapter of FEA currently has 58 student members.
