Student exhibit on display through Jan. 4

Cameo by Catherine Hess

This December, students at Hagerstown Community College will exhibit photographic artwork at the Washington County Arts Council, located at 14 West Washington Street in Hagerstown.

“The Eye Test” exhibit will feature artwork by HCC students in Benita Keller’s advanced photography class, “Photography for Public Discourse.” The course teaches students about various aspects of fine arts photography including portrait, event, and street photography with commercial applications.

“I’m excited to be able to offer this experience to students I’ve worked with for two semesters,” says Keller, a freelance fine art photographer and photojournalist who teaches photography part-time at HCC. “These students have a real passion for photography and it’s amazing to see how their vision has matured over the last year. It was hard to choose which photos to include in the show because there were so many great photographs. The ones that were chosen really engage the eye and the brain and encourage viewers to see and think in a new light.”

Students participating in the exhibition include Reuben Gaylord, Vicki Durr- Graham, Mark Keats, Danielle Moler, Pamela Newman, and Suzanne Smith, all of Hagerstown; Catherine Hess, of Hancock; Deborah Westphal, of Rohrersville; and Lisa Blumberg, of Smithsburg.

An opening reception will be held on Fri., Dec. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. The opening will coincide with the opening of the Washington County Art Council’s Annual Community Art Show, which will feature the best local art of 2011.

“The Eye Test” exhibit will be on display from Dec. 8 through Jan.4. For exhibit hours or more information, go to
