DBHM Celebration of Black History Month featuring Bowie State University Gospel Choir
The Bowie State University Gospel Choir was first organized by the late Professor Levenis Smith in l975. Under his leadership the university and choir became known for its gospel renditions. In l996, Dr. Joan Hillsman was appointed as professor and Gospel Choir director, with a mission to build a quality program of gospel music experiences. Under this program student composers, instrumentalists and directors exhibit and share their talents in this academic setting. The choir has been very active in supporting the activities on campus, Maryland State House, community churches and most recently celebrated its first Annual Choir Day on campus.
