Breaking Through the Clouds debuts March 22

Breaking Through the Clouds

To celebrate Women's History Month, the documentary film "Breaking Through the Clouds: The First Women’s National Air Derby," will be shown on Thurs., March 22, at 7 p.m., in the Kepler Theater.

The film is an award-winning documentary about 20 female pilots, including Amelia Earhart, who raced across the country for nine days in August 1929 to prove that women could fly.  They chased their dreams and encountered cultural stereotypes, navigation challenges, threats of sabotage, and mechanical difficulties. The women persevered and became pioneering legends in aviation. Included in the documentary is actual footage of the race, aerial recreations, interviews with legendary pilot Elinor Smith, National Aerobatic Champion Patty Wagstaff, family members of the pilots, and aviation experts.

Heather Taylor, of Columbia, Md., researched, wrote, directed, and produced the documentary.  She will be present at the showing at HCC on March 22 and will answer questions from the audience after the film. "Breaking Through the Cloud"s was recently accepted into the Women’s International Film Festival which will be held in Miami, Florida from March 28 through April 1.
