In May 2012, the Continuing Education and Community Services Division at Hagerstown Community College will once again host nationally-known instructor Denise Schlegel, who will offer her grant-writing workshop, “Grant Writing – Show Me the Money ©.”
This three-day workshop provides instruction for both beginning grant writers and experienced professionals. Topics include grant components and development, the identification of funding sources, and the submission process for grant proposals. The workshop will be held daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., beginning Mon., May 21 and ending Wed., May 23, in the Career Programs Building on HCC’s main campus. Cost is $349 per person after May 1, 2012. Participants who register prior to May 1 will be eligible to receive an early-bird registration rate of $295 per person. Registration fee includes all tuition, fees, and material costs including the “Show Me the Money ©” workbook. Students are asked to bring a project idea to the workshop and are also encouraged to provide a current funding announcement or a request for proposals.
“After taking Denise Schlegel’s grant writing course at HCC, I am pleased to tell you that I have applied for and received three grants, one which was a $90,000 grant,” said Laura Wilson, coordinator of grant and financial development, Shenandoah Valley Medical System, Inc. “The seminar was so interesting and useful. I cannot thank Denise enough for sharing her wisdom.”
In addition the grant-writing course, Schlegel will also offer “Strategic Planning for Beginners,” on May 24 and 25, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day, in the Career Programs Building on HCC’s main campus. This course will provide participants with information on how to develop a mission and vision statement; how to set organization priorities; and how to engage stakeholders. The course is designed for all levels of government and nonprofit organizations. Cost is $295 per person after May 1, 2012. Participants who register prior to May 1 will be eligible to receive an early-bird registration rate of $249 per person.
An expert in her field, Schlegel has served as a peer grant reviewer for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; has developed curriculum for the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C.; and facilitated strategic planning with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. She is the president and founder of DS Schlegel and Associates, LLC, and currently serves as the senior grant consultant and contributing author for PoliceOne.com.
