This July, students at Hagerstown Community College will exhibit original artwork at the Washington County Arts Council, located at 14 West Washington Street in Hagerstown.

The “Body and Soul” exhibit will feature artwork by HCC students in Janet Salter’s portraiture and figure drawing classes. According to Salter, these classes are intended for students with basic drawing skills who desire to gain a better understanding of how underlying form and structure can have a greater impact on portraiture and figure drawing.

“In these classes, we work with a live model so students can study the gesture, movement, structure, volume and character of the model firsthand,” said Salter. “Those elements bring a work to life. And when students are able to translate the figure’s subtle shifts into a work, increased sensitivity to everything they see will result.”

Students participating in the exhibition include Jill Atherton, Amanda Fairchild, Dorothy Gertz, Rachel Krumpelman, Donna Mason, Rachel Parks, Sean Plunkett, Marge Poling, Jeremy Prince, and Lauren Doyle Vaccari, all of Hagerstown; Monique Hope, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; Madeline Harmon, of Mercersburg, Pa.; and Christopher Mitchell, of Smithsburg.

The exhibit will run from July 6 through July 31. An opening reception will be held on Fri., July 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. For exhibit hours or more information, go to www.washingtoncountyarts.com.
