Biotech Summer Institute held June 17-Aug. 9

High school students at the Biotech Summer Institute

Hagerstown Community College is proud to offer its fourth annual Biotechnology Summer Institute (BSI) for high school students. The 2013 BSI will offer a very unique learning opportunity for students who are interested in advancing their education in a field related to science, healthcare, engineering, and biotechnology. This year's institute will be held from June 17 through Aug. 9, 2013, in the STEM Building on HCC's main campus.

This competitive program will offer 20 select students a chance to earn seven college credits during the eight-week summer institute. Tuition and fees will be funded partially or fully by HCC’s ESSENCE program and a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.

Accepted students will have an opportunity to:

  • Earn seven college science credits
  • Explore careers in biotechnology
  • Gain valuable hands–on laboratory experience
  • Participate in Q&A sessions with guest speakers from diverse areas of biotechnology
  • Go on field trips to state-of-the-art scientific research labs

All students accepted to the BSI will enroll in BTC 101, Introduction to Biotechnology (3 credits). Additionally, all students will take BIO 113 and 113L, Principles of Biology I (4 credits) unless they have completed AP Biology and received a score of 3 or higher on the national AP examination. If this requirement has been met, students have the opportunity to substitute another 4-credit biology or chemistry course. AP exam scores must received by May 1, 2013 to allow for a BIO 113 course substitution.

Deadline to apply is March 29, 2013.

Interested students need to submit an application form, essay responses, and one teacher recommendation. Applicants must be 16 years or older to take part in the summer institute. For an application or more information, contact Alicia Manfre at 240-500-2465 or email
