As part of the upcoming Nora Roberts Writing Institute (NRWI) at Hagerstown Community College, HCC will also offer a special Young Writers Institute for high school students entering ninth, tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade.

The Young Writers Institute will be held on Aug. 2 and 3, the same weekend as NRWI, and will feature a series of workshops and events specially geared towards aspiring, young writers. Workshops will include fiction-crafting and publishing, as well as the opportunity to network with other teen writers. Cost is $85 per person.

Participants also have the opportunity to take part in a writing contest. The “What’s Your Backstory?” contest asks students to submit an original work of fiction in 1,000 words or less featuring a main character in a critical moment. The grand-prize winner will receive free tuition to the Young Writers Institute and a $50 gift card to Amazon.com. The winning entry will also be read during the opening session of NRWI on Aug. 2. Two additional runner-up winners will receive a 50 percent discount on tuition to the Young Writers Institute and a $25 gift card to Amazon.com. All contest participants will receive a free copy of their published work in the contest magazine, “Back Talk,” which will be distributed during the conference.

Contest deadline is July 8, 2013. For submission guidelines or more information about the Young Writers Institute, go to www.hagerstowncc.edu/kids/youngwriters.html or call 240-500-2236. For more information about the HCC Nora Roberts Writing Institute, go to http://nrwi.hagerstowncc.edu.
