(Release: April 19, 2013) - The Hagerstown Community College Board of Trustees has been studying naming recognitions at the college and recently announced a decision to name the lobby of the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center as the ARCC Volunteers Tribute Lobby in honor of the Al Sheaffer Volunteer Corps.
“For more than 25 years, this dedicated group of volunteers has contributed countless hours of volunteer service and raised approximately $500,000 for student-athlete scholarships,” said HCC President Guy Altieri. “I’m so pleased that the board of trustees made the unanimous decision to honor them in this special way.”
Soon after the ARCC was built in 1988, this volunteer group was created through the leadership efforts of Al Sheaffer, a local community leader. Over the years, the Al Sheaffer Volunteers Corps has grown in numbers and contributions. Their generosity, much of which came from the sale of concessions sold at the Courtside Café, has resulted in 17 endowed student-athlete scholarships.
“The entire staff of the ARCC offers congratulations to the volunteers for all they have done over the years,” said Robert Myers, HCC athletic director. “They are a wonderful example for the entire community of what a group can do when they establish goals and work together to reach them.”
The lobby will be recognized with signage and a dedication ceremony will be held later this year.
