Cycle United logo created by HCC student

(Release: January 13, 2014) - Meredith Brown listened carefully when the folks from United Way of Washington County said they wanted a Cycle United logo that would be unique, but reflect the right message.

“One of the main messages they wanted to communicate was community,” said Brown. “That concept fit perfectly with my desire to use typography. I wanted to give them something different and I think I did.”

Her concept proved to be successful when her design was chosen as the winning logo from more than a dozen entries. Brown, a graphic design student at Hagerstown Community College, designed the logo as part of a class assignment at HCC, under the guidance of Professor Ellen Smith, who is a United Way committee member.

“United Way likes to collaborate and working with HCC is a true partnership that benefits both parties,” said Melissa Reabold, executive director of United Way. “The benefit to Meredith is the real-life experience of pitching a design and then working with a client. The benefit to United Way was to get a fresh look and feel that projects fun and is appealing to the public.”

Brown, 35, a resident of Hagerstown, is majoring in graphic design technology at HCC. She plans to continue her education after HCC, ultimately earning a master’s degree in fine arts. She currently works full-time at First Data, but aspires to teach Web or graphic design in the future.

“I have had the most amazing teachers at HCC and their passion for design and teaching definitely shows,” Brown said. “It’s inspired me to follow in their footsteps.”

As for creating the winning logo design, Brown says it has helped her realize that her hard work is paying off. “I look at the design on the United Way website and think, ‘Wow, I did that.’”

Cycle United is an annual fundraising event that promotes fitness and raises needed funds for Washington County, Md. Proceeds of this family-oriented event benefit United Way's Community Impact fund. This year’s event will be held March 1 at the Valley Mall. For more information and to see Brown’s logo, visit www.unitedwaywashcounty.org.
