HCC student lands job as county communications coordinator

(Release: January 23, 2014) - Hagerstown Community College student Lauren Pogue, of Smithsburg, recently took a job as the communications coordinator for the Washington County Department of Public Relations and Community Affairs.

As communications coordinator, Pogue is responsible for photographing county events, managing the county’s social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, planning events, offering administrative support in the Public Relations and Community Affairs Office, and conducting graphic design work for the county.

According to Pogue, the job is nonstop, but she loves every minute of it.

“I’m a project person, so I like being busy,” said Pogue. “My favorite part is the photography. I get to take all the official photos at county events, and I also get to be creative and use a more photojournalistic style, which I prefer, once all the formal photos have been taken.”

Pogue honed her photography skills at HCC, taking several classes with adjunct instructor and fine arts photographer Benita Keller. Her most recent course, “Photography for the Public Discourse,” focused specifically on taking commercial portraits, environmental and event portraits, and street shooting.

"Lauren has been a photography student of mine for several of my classes," said Keller. "She has always been an excellent and hardworking student, balancing married life and working full-time with school. I think she so deserved this position and I am very proud of her.”

Pogue, a graphic design major, will graduate from HCC in fall 2015. After graduating, she plans to transfer to a four-year institution to obtain a bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications.
