(Hagerstown, MD) – Hagerstown Community College will host the R. Benjamin Jones Memorial Lecture, “For the Love of the Arts,” on Wednesday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in the Kepler Theater. David Jones will be the featured speaker at this inaugural event to honor his late father, R. Benjamin Jones, who passed away in 2017.
R. Benjamin Jones was a Presbyterian minister, teacher, and artist. An accomplished painter, he enjoyed creating images of everyday life from his native Maryland and the many places he visited. His paintings captured the gentle beauty of the world through delicate flowers, New England streets and harbors, Amish faces, and farm animals. He was an adjunct instructor at HCC for more than 20 years. For 14 years, he held an annual benefit art show and sale at HCC, which raised more than $300,000 for HCC student scholarships.
Growing up, David Jones had a strong interest in science and art. In his presentation, he will discuss the influence of his father in his pursuit of the arts and his life in general. He will share stories and lessons learned through years of education and exploration, guided by nature and nurture.
While David is a working artist, he is also employed as a research associate in the media research and development department at Lonza in Walkersville, Md. He holds a master’s degree in biotechnology from the Johns Hopkins University.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Ashlyn Rebok, in the English and Humanities Division at HCC, at 240-500-2252.
