HCC to name fitness center after Palmer

(Release: June 10, 2013) - The Hagerstown Community College Board of Trustees recently announced a decision to name the college fitness center the Marlys Palmer Fitness Center.

“During her 33 years at HCC, Coach Palmer was a superb coach, devoted teacher, and excellent role model,” said HCC President Guy Altieri. “I’m pleased the Board of Trustees decided to honor her outstanding contributions in this way.”

Palmer taught health and physical education at HCC for 33 years and served as a record-winning coach for the women’s volleyball and basketball teams. She led the women’s basketball team to its first NJCAA National Tournament in 1983 and went on to coach the team to more than 600 wins. She also led the volleyball team to more than 600 victories.

“I had the great opportunity to mentor under Coach Palmer when I first arrived and she is a true inspiration who practices what she teaches,” said Thomas Burge, coordinator of the fitness center. “Her enthusiasm and motivation were very contagious in the fitness center. I think it is a great honor it will be named after her.”

She has been inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the NJCAA Region XX Hall of Fame, the Washington County Maryland Sports Hall of Fame, and the HCC Hawk Booster Club Hall of Fame. She holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. The Marlys Palmer Fitness Center will be recognized with signage and a dedication ceremony is being planned for the fall.
