(August 15, 2017) – Starting this fall, Hagerstown Community College will offer an associate of applied science degree in health information management (HIM). Recently approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the program was created in response to the tremendous growth opportunities in the health information management field.
“The Bureau of Labor Statistics cites health information management as one of the nation’s, as well as Maryland’s, fastest-growing occupations, increasing the demand for skilled professionals in administrative technology, information management, and health care services,” said Dr. Kathleen J. D’Ambrisi, director of HCC’s Health Sciences Division. “Changes in federal health information privacy regulations have fueled an even greater demand for highly educated professionals who will have a clear understanding to manage and analyze information for both patients and the facilities where they receive care.”
The first course, Fundamentals of Electronic Health Records (HIM 101), will be offered this fall, as part of the first semester in the program pathway. The multi-disciplinary curriculum focuses on healthcare data as the foundation for information and knowledge management systems, and emphasizes health data management, clinical, and administrative decision-making, strategic planning, and outcomes management.
The HIM program will provide operational knowledge and practical skills to prepare healthcare professionals to manage electronic health records in a variety of settings such as doctor’s offices, hospitals, insurance companies, and other health-related employment settings. Job titles associated with health information management include clinical coding specialist, physician practice manager, insurance claims analyst, privacy officer, systems manager, patient information coordinator, and electronic health records developer.
Upon successful completion of the HIM program, students will be eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician Certification exam offered through the American Health Information Management Association.
A certificate program in electronic health records is pending approval by MHEC. To learn more about HCC’s Health Information Management Program, visit www.hagerstowncc.edu/him.
