(April 27, 2017) – Hagerstown Community College student Edison Ly has been accepted to The United States Military Academy at West Point. Ly, 18, of Williamsport, has been enrolled in HCC’s STEMM Technical Middle College for the past two years. He will receive three associate degrees from HCC in May, in engineering, mathematics, and physics, just prior to his graduation from Williamsport High School.

“I’m honored to be accepted at West Point, to be challenged in physical, academic and military aspects within my four years is something I and many others dream of,” said Ly. “With a degree from West Point, I’ll have the opportunity to lead and serve in a meaningful way while still pursuing my interests in engineering.”

“We are thrilled that Edison has been able to use his substantial academic accomplishments in the middle college to secure acceptance to West Point,” said HCC President Guy Altieri. “I cannot think of anyone more qualified with so many applicable attributes to be a superb military leader after completing his studies at one of our country’s most prestigious service academies. He is another great success story emerging from HCC’s partnership with local high schools, to provide early college opportunities for advanced students.”

While at HCC, Ly continued extracurricular activities at Williamsport High School, including the tennis team, Student Government Association, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and band. At West Point, he plans to pursue electrical engineering and ultimately become involved with an organization that can affect positive change in the world.
