(October 9, 2018) – During the 2018 spring and summer semesters, Hagerstown Community College English students, Johanna Bulley and Lynn Martin, both of Hagerstown; and Mike Tucker, of Williamsport, interned with HCC’s literary magazine, the Hedge Apple. As editors, they brought a new energy and vision to the magazine, including the acceptance of worldwide contributions; publishing and marketing on Amazon; special themed issues, and distribution to 40 contributors of prose, poetry, art, and creative nonfiction.
Bulley, 20, is now studying English and economics at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Before her internship with the Hedge Apple, she had no experience in the publishing world. Acquiring these new skills gave her the opportunity to become a web editor for the SMCM campus newspaper.
Martin, 22, is currently studying literature and philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park. Interning with the Hedge Apple gave him a chance to work with other editors and get insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the current writing culture.
Tucker, 48, is studying English and human services at HCC. Gaining written communication skills while interning with the Hedge Apple has been an asset for his current journalist endeavors. He currently writes festival and album reviews for The Jamwich, a music, arts, and lifestyle magazine, as well as a monthly column covering local music for The Hub City Post.
The Hedge Apple was founded in 1999 by Askold Skalsky, a former professor of English and foreign languages at HCC, now retired. Past editions of the Hedge Apple included contributions from -MORE- HCC students and faculty. Now the magazine aims to broaden the scope of both submissions and readership and to foster participation in a much larger literary community. Contributors worldwide are encouraged to submit stories, poems, and artwork, as well as video, audio, and mixed media submissions.
