(September 23, 2009) - Hagerstown Community College has appointed Ricky L. Ulrich as director of its InnovaBio-MD program, a partnership of corporations and educators, modeled after the InnovaBio program at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. InnovaBio-MD offers a hands-on approach to enhance student laboratory skills in a biotechnology setting.
This is a new position in HCC’s biotechnology program which will oversee an on-campus internship program housed in the wet labs in HCC’s Technical Innovation Center. As director, Ulrich will be responsible for supervising and mentoring biotechnology interns from HCC, Frostburg State University, and Washington County Public Schools. He recently attended training at Salt Lake Community College, which focused on contracting projects from industry/research labs for student interns. The first student internships have already been identified and will involve actual research being conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID ) at Fort Detrick.
Ulrich holds a Ph.D. in microbiology from Clemson University and worked as a microbiologist at USAMRIID at Fort Detrick from 2001 to 2008.
