(November 22, 2017) – Hagerstown Community College’s Student Financial Aid Office is currently accepting applications for the S-STEM scholarships, available for qualifying full-time students majoring in STEM programs at HCC during the 2017-2018 academic year. The spring semester deadline is Friday, December 8. Spring classes begin on January 8.
The maximum student award, provided through National Science Foundation grant #1259859, is up to $3,000 per semester, depending on eligibility and available funding. The grant is available from June 1, 2013, to May 31, 2018. Scholarship decisions are determined by the S-STEM Scholarship Committee and are based on academic promise and financial need.
Once awarded an S-STEM scholarship, recipients must meet scholarship requirements to remain eligible. Requirements include registering for a one-credit S-STEM seminar course, becoming a member of the STEM club, using the Learning Support Center (LSC) for a minimum of three hours per week, attending field trips and annual recognition ceremony, and meeting with the S-STEM advisor once a month.
S-STEM scholarship recipients have the opportunity to visit four-year colleges or universities or industrial locations each semester. Previous recipients have visited Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland College Park, NASA Goddard Center, and Volvo. These field trips allow recipients to get an inside look at the types of jobs, or skills that are used within the STEM fields of computer science, biology, engineering, cybersecurity, and more.
