Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education will host its second annual Guitar Mini-Fest on Saturday, April 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, in The Merle S. Elliott Continuing Education and Conference Center at HCC.
The HCC Guitar Mini-Fest will feature a host of musical workshops by several outstanding musicians including Kathrin Murray, Steve Herberman and Tobias Hurwitz. HCC instructor Candice Mowbray will host the event.
Kathrin Murray is a seasoned guitarist that has performed all over the United States and abroad. A much sought-after teacher, Murray has served on the guitar faculties at a variety of schools, and currently heads the classical guitar studies at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.
Tobias Hurwitz has been avidly playing rock guitar since 1977. Each summer, he works for the National Guitar Workshop and has been widely published in a variety of guitar magazines including Guitar Player, Guitar One, and Guitar. Hurwitz is deeply involved in the Zen Guitar movement, and has authored many books for The National Guitar Workshop and Alfred Publications. Steve Herberman is a 1988 graduate of the Berklee College of Music and has been a guest artist and clinician at several esteemed music schools and camps throughout the United States including the Maryland Summer Jazz camp. To date, Herberman has recorded three CDs as bandleader and has been featured in Guitar One, 20th Century Guitar, and Just Jazz Guitar magazine. HCC instructor Candice Mowbray earned a master’s degree in classical guitar performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia and is currently pursuing a doctorate in musical arts. She performs 50 to 70 recitals, concerts, and private engagements each year and was named one of the “Top 5 People To Watch” by Hagerstown Magazine in 2007. The schedule of events is as follows:
8:30-9 a.m. – Participant Check-In
9-9:50 a.m. – Classical Workshop: Kathrin Murray leads participants through warm
exercises and basic classical/fingerstyle guitar techniques.
10-10:50 a.m. – Rock Workshop: Tobias Hurwitz teaches advanced rock guitar skills including picking
techniques, sweep picking, and much more.
11-11:50 a.m. – Jazz Workshop: Steve Herberman discusses basic improvisation skills associated with jazz
and blues performance.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own guitars, pencils, and folding music stands. Availability is
