This summer, Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education is offering two history classes at HCC’s Fort Ritchie campus in Cascade.
The first course, “George Washington in the French and Indian War, 1753-1758,” will focus on Washington’s personal and physical traits, and will also chronicle his life throughout the revolutionary war. Topics include Washington’s diplomatic journey to the French in 1753, The Fort Necessity campaign of 1754, the myths and realities of his roles in General Braddock’s 1755 campaign, his efforts as commander of Virginia’s frontier defense from 1755-1758, and his role in the Forbes campaign of 1758.
The course is offered on Wednesdays from July 9 through July 23 and will be taught by HCC instructor Roger Swartz. Swartz is the owner of R.G. Swartz & Associates, a consulting firm that specializes in providing historical services, products, and workshops to educational institutions and historical organizations.
The second course, “The 1862 Maryland Campaign,” will closely examine how the Maryland campaign had a direct impact on the final outcome of the American Civil War. Topics include Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, as well as the routes taken by both the northern and southern armies and the long-term implications of the war’s outcome.
The course is offered on Wednesdays from July 9 through July 30 and will be taught by HCC Instructor Jeff Driscoll. Driscoll is an independent tour guide and lecturer who specializes in Civil War and World War II history, and teaches a variety of courses at the college.
HCC began offering classes at Fort Ritchie at Cascade in March of 2008. All classes are open to the public and include courses for college credit, as well as continuing education classes. Credit and non-credit classes will be offered each spring, summer, and fall semesters. HCC plans to offer future courses based on community need.
