Joan Bontempo, associate professor of art appreciation and art history at Hagerstown Community College, is one of five artists to exhibit in the annual sculpture invitational at the Marin-Price Galleries in Chevy Chase, Md. The show opens Sat., Aug. 4 and runs through Fri., Aug. 31.
This is Bontempo’s third invitation to exhibit in this show. She has been sculpting in ceramics for over 25 years. She is featuring seven new works in this show. The works were made by using lace and canvas in stoneware or porcelain, and draped over a “figure” form. The figure burns out in the firing, and the wrapping or cloth remains solidified in the clay and glazes. The pieces represent the spiritual presence of ancient defenders, prophets and angels.
The other artists featured in the show are Joseph Sheppard, Nina Akamu, Jane DeDecker, and Kimberly Seibert. To learn more, visit www.marin-pricegalleries.com .
