HCC student named University of Maryland Shipley Regents Scholar
Shiv Patel, 17, of Hagerstown, has been named a Shipley Regents Scholar through the University System of Maryland, and will begin his studies in the aerospace engineering program in January.
In the spring of 2018, Patel graduated with an associate degree from the STEMM Technical Middle College at Hagerstown Community College, at the same time he received his high school diploma from North Hagerstown High School. At HCC, he majored in engineering, physics, mathematics, and science.
“I’m excited to attend the aerospace engineering program at College Park,” said Patel. “My hard work in high school and at HCC has paid off. I was focused on the reward and I’m thankful to have this opportunity.”
The Regents Scholar Program was established by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents to affirm its commitment to academic excellence and to enable students of exceptional ability to develop fully their intellectual and creative talents. In recognition of the contributions of outstanding transfer students, the Board of Regents designated the Shipley Regents Scholarship be awarded to a Maryland community college student.
In Patel’s acceptance letter, it states that his selection was due to “outstanding academic achievements and exceptional promise.” At USM, he will receive a full scholarship, plus room and board, as long as he maintains a 3.5 grade-point average and is enrolled full time.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Patel played varsity soccer and tennis at North High, and has been working as a tutor in HCC’s Learning Support Center. His career goal is to work for NASA or SpaceX.
